Comedienne Melai Cantiveros expressed her openness to taking on the lead role in a potential revival of ‘Ang Tanging Ina’ but highlighted her reservations about stepping into the iconic role initially played by Aiai delas Alas.
Cantiveros shared her thoughts during a press conference for her upcoming talk show ‘Kuan-On-One,’ which aims to spotlight Bisaya talent. The show, set to air on July 2, will feature notable guests such as BINI members Colet and Aiah, Kim Chiu, Maymay Entrata, and Christian Bables.
When asked if she would consider taking on the lead role originally portrayed by Aiai delas Alas, Cantiveros responded positively but cautiously.
“Kung i-offer sa ‘kin, why not? Sobrang happy pero hindi natin i-bypass si Ms. Aiai delas Alas kasi siya talaga ang ating Queen of Comedy… Dami niya nang napatunayan. Nandiyan pa sina Ate Pokey (Pokwang), sina Eugene Domingo,” she said.
Cantiveros emphasized the importance of respecting the original actress and other senior comediennes in the industry. “Kaya kung i-kuan why not pero wala tayong mga hurt na mga tao,” she added.
Instead of taking over an established role, Cantiveros suggested creating an entirely new project. “Gawa na lang tayo ng sarili natin,” she proposed, jokingly adding, “‘Kuan Ng Ina,’ char char lang.”
Aiai delas Alas originally portrayed the character Ina Montecillo in the 2003 hit movie ‘Ang Tanging Ina.’ The film was followed by two sequels: ‘Ang Tanging Ina N’yong Lahat’ in 2008 and ‘Ang Tanging Ina Mo (Last na ‘To!)’ in 2010.
Melai Cantiveros’ new show, ‘Kuan-On-One,’ aims to celebrate and showcase the rich talent of the Bisaya community, with a lineup of notable guests that promises engaging and entertaining conversations.
