In a heartfelt press conference held on May 9 for their movie ‘Seoulmate,’ filmmaker Darryl Yap expressed his gratitude and appreciation for Kim Molina and Jerald Napoles, who have remained true friends despite their political differences.
During the 2022 elections, Yap, Molina, and Napoles supported different candidates. Yap expressed his support for now Philippine President Bongbong Marcos, while the couple backed former Vice President Leni Robredo.
These political differences caused rifts between the three, with Molina even choosing not to speak to her movie director at one point.
Yap considers himself one of the “lucky” ones, especially given how politics has destroyed some showbiz friendships.
“Maswerte pa rin ako. Ang dami ko kasing kaibigang artista rin, na producers, na directors na noong panahon ng eleksyon, talagang nawala ang mga kaibigan nila,” he noted. “That’s why ako masaya pa rin ako. Kasi andiyan pa rin ang mga totoong kaibigan.”
He feels fortunate to have friends like Molina and Napoles, whom he described as “intelligent people.” He often mentions them in his university talks as part of his advice to the younger generation.
“Choose intelligent people, smart people. You don’t have to explain everything to them. Kaya napakaswerte ko na matatalino ang mga kaibigan ko,” the filmmaker said.
Yap’s latest film, “Seoulmate,” marks a significant milestone in his career, following the success of his previous works “Jowable” and “Ang Babaeng Walang Pakiramdam.” He described the new project as “really a God’s gift,” underscoring his gratitude for the opportunities and friendships that have come his way.
