Rock musicians Jugs Jugueta and Teddy Corpuz shared heartfelt recollections of their early days as hosts on ‘It’s Showtime’ during a recent interview on ‘Fast Talk with Boy Abunda.’
The duo joined the popular noontime show in 2009, alongside renowned personalities such as Vice Ganda, Anne Curtis, Vhong Navarro, Karylle, and former hosts Billy Crawford and Kuya Kim Atienza.
Opening up to veteran TV host Boy Abunda, Jugs admitted feeling out of place initially due to his limited knowledge of celebrities.
He confessed, “For me, it’s very difficult, Tito Boy, lalo na nung first few years kasi may mga guest sa ABS [-CBN] sa Showtime na…tinatanong ko, ‘Sino ‘yun? Artista ba ‘yun?’ Tapos siya [Teddy Corpuz] ‘yung magsasabi na, ‘Ah jowa niya ‘yung ganito tapos ganito,’ Kasi I didn’t know anyone except you and Kris [Aquino].”
Teddy humorously chimed in, jokingly remarking, “Ako naman po I was really born as a star talaga.”
He went on to explain that he already had camera experience from his stint as a cast member on ‘Idol Ko si Kap’ on GMA. “Seryoso… Bago pa kasi ako mag-Rocksteddy nag-aarti-artista na ako before…here in GMA. So ‘yung fast talk, ako ‘yung pinakamabilis magsalita sa Idol ko si Kap before,” Teddy shared.
Teddy also mentioned his prior involvement in spoken word performances before it gained popularity. “Hindi pa uso ‘yung spoken word, nag-i-spoken word na ako before. So medyo may training na ako ng kaunti sa pagiging in front of the camera sa pag-acting. So kami ni Jugs medyo ako ‘yung ano niya, ‘yung, ‘Pare ‘wag mo akong iiwan dito ha.'”
Being frontmen of their respective bands, Jugs for Itchyworms and Teddy for Rocksteddy, they often had late-night gigs, making the transition to early mornings for ‘Showtime’ challenging.
Reflecting on their dedication to the show, Jugs revealed, “When Showtime started it was a morning show. So medyo it was difficult for us kasi medyo sanay kami na parang 12:00 [midnight] natutulog tapos 2:00 p.m. gumigising. Pero nung nag-start ang Showtime kailangan gumising kami ng 7:30 a.m. So medyo nahirapan po kami nung umpisa.”
Despite the adjustment, they made sure to adhere to the show’s call time to avoid being replaced. “Hindi kami aalis, tatanggalin nila kami,” Teddy quipped, adding, “Hindi kami aalis dito kahit babuyin namin ang sarili namin.”
Acknowledging their resilience, Jugs humorously remarked, “At saka ilang beses na ‘yung kapit sa patalim. ‘Wag n’yo kaming tanggalin parang awa n’yo na.'”
During the ‘Fast Talk’ segment, they described the camaraderie they’ve built on ‘It’s Showtime’ as “loyal” and “authentic.”
Currently, ‘It’s Showtime’ boasts a diverse lineup of hosts, including Jhong Hilario, Kim Chiu, Ogie Alcasid, Amy Perez, Ryan Bang, Darren Espanto, MC Mwah, Lassy, Ion Perez, Jackie Gonzaga, Cianne Dominguez, and others.
