Reacting to the controversy surrounding Morissette Amon’s alleged unprofessional behavior, Asia’s Vocal Supreme Katrina Velarde on March 19 came to her fellow musician’s defense.
Amon was recently accused by an event director named Vic Sevilla of delivering a lackluster performance at a corporate event. Sevilla went so much as to claim that the Asia’s Phoenix sounded “distant and cold,” and as if the singer’s “enthusiasm escaped her the moment she stepped on stage.”
Despite these accusations, the Asia’s Phoenix clarified that she had persevered through illness, attending the event and performing to the best of her abilities.
During her ZCON Concert media conference at Myeongdong Korean Gastropub in Quezon City, Valerde defended Amon by saying with certainty that her fellow singer did her best.
“Ginawa naman niya ang best niya,” she concluded. “Parang wala naman akong nakitang mali kasi it’s still Morissette.”
According to her, people expected more of Amon, but given that the latter was feeling under the sun before the performance, it was a lot of heart to perform, and had given a stellar performance nonetheless.
“Siguro ‘yung expectations ng mga tao which is hindi naman lahat napi-please kasi. But at least, she still showed up and then still performed very well.
Playing it smart
Velarde understands that she cannot please everyone and that there will be times when she is not in her best shape. To avoid facing backlash, she comes prepared in all of her shows, to the point that if she must change a song, she will.
The singer said it was for her to gauge the limitations of her voice, so as not to disappoint her audience.
In every gig, the singer always brings her equipment along with her. This is to avoid any unexpected situations, like suddenly getting sick, or worse, losing the power in her voice.
If she knew she could not hit a certain note, she would tweak the song to make it more voice-friendly.
Velarde said she does this, especially with social media being a hub for a person’s mistakes. To avoid being criticized for a single error, the smartest thing to do is not to make one.
Hindi naman sa pagiging safe pero parang you have to be smart.”
