On February 15, actress Jasmine Curtis-Smith admitted to having fears about artificial intelligence and virtual reality that could simulate emotions.
At the media event for A Glimpse of Forever, which LionhearTV covered, Curtis-Smith acknowledged the appeal of virtual reality to lonely people.
“For me, iba na kasi ‘yung panahon ngayon na pumapasok na ‘yung virtual reality sa mundo natin. Medyo, madali rin talaga ma-hook, lalo na sa mga taong mag-isa, or di kaya, like the role of Jerome in this film, may pinagdadaanan, social anxiety disorder, nagiging comfort zone siya for a lot.”
She then voiced her apprehensions about AI or VR that could elicit emotional responses.
“Alam ko, prone ako to rely on tech para ma-ease ‘yung nararamdaman ko, para ma-distract ako, para mawala muna ako. Pero, natatakot ako mag-rely sa isang virtual reality na talagang nag-re-respond ng with feelings. Kasi parang iba na ‘yun eh. Kasi parang iba po ‘yung mga ChatGPT, ‘yung mga ganyan, iba pa ‘yun eh. Parang, feel mo na robot pa rin ‘yun eh. I don’t think I would that’s too scary.”
As for her role in the romance-sci-fi film, Curtis-Smith discussed what it was like working with her co-stars and their director.
“Yes, it was my first time working with Jerome and Direk JP, but I [actually] worked with Jerome [a long time ago.] Pero hindi po siya for TV– we did like a Sta. Cruzan together for like a provincial town, and ever since then, we always see each other sa mga events. So, noong nabanggit po na siya ‘yung makakasama ko, at least immediately there was that familiarity with each other.
“And the same with Diego, we kind of run the same circle. So wala namang awkwardness or any hindrances there. Right away, there was ability para sa amin pareho na maging–magkaroon ng connection, kasi kami po ‘yung mag-asawa dito, we play husband and wife.”
She also recounted how she accepted the role after reading the script for A Glimpse of Forever.
“And when I got the script as well–it’s also kind of na modern tech na sci-fi po. First time ko siya ma-encounter sa script. Kasi, in the past, medyo neo-world, medyo end-of-the-era, you know, it’s not this kind of refreshing type– or kind of[nice] type of colorful, light (story)–it feels [younger and fresher] for me to play this role and do a story like this.”
A Glimpse of Forever stars Jasmine Curtis-Smith, Jerome Ponce, and Diego Loyzaga.
Under the direction and story of Jason Paul Laxamana, A Glimpse of Forever opens on March 6 in cinemas nationwide.
