A recent episode of the afternoon teleserye ‘Abot-Kamay na Pangarap’ on GMA Network has stirred up controversy due to a particular scene involving a reference to Baliuag, Bulacan.
In the scene, the lines “Naku, mukhang lumuluwag na ang turnilyo nito” and “Papunta na ito sa Baliuag, Bulacan” were delivered, drawing criticism from viewers, especially those hailing from Baliuag.
One Baliuag resident expressed disappointment, remarking, “The remarks made in the scene in ‘Abot-Kamay na Pangarap’ are disappointing. Just because we live in Baliuag City, Bulacan, doesn’t mean we’re considered ‘crazy.’ I used to watch this show regularly.”
I used to watch this before since napapanood din nila mama pero kinatagalan naging cheap talaga yung flow nung story like may pagpapasabog ng hospital tapos yung napakatagal malaman na anak ni Richard Yap si Doc Analyn. https://t.co/1pYDYXeKQN

Similarly, a netizen on X (formerly Twitter) addressed GMA Network and GMADrama, calling out the insensitivity of the script regarding mental health issues, despite the series being helmed by Doc Analyn.
Even Baliuag City Mayor Ferdie Estrella voiced his concern about the scene in the Kapuso teleserye through an official statement from his office.

In the episode of ‘Abot-Kamay na Pangarap’ aired on February 14, 2024, the name of Baliuag City was mentioned as part of the dialogue of one of the characters.
However, the reference to Baliuag, Bulacan, was used in a comedic context, which drew criticism for displaying a lack of knowledge and sensitivity to important issues.
Baliuag, Bulacan, is a city rich in history and culture, known for its prominent figures such as Mariano Ponce and Col. Antonio Buenaventura, as well as its cultural heritage sites. The origin of the name “Baliuag” does not stem from the word “baliw” (crazy). Instead, it is an old Tagalog word meaning deep or profound, as documented in various dictionaries and historical texts.
The mayor highlighted the need for a thorough understanding of a place’s history before incorporating it into a storyline. Moreover, he condemned the insulting portrayal of mental health issues, especially when associating Baliuag as a punchline or derogatory term.
The portrayal of sensitive topics, such as mental health, should be handled with care and respect, especially in television shows, which have a responsibility to provide accurate information and uphold cultural sensitivity.
While the incident has sparked controversy, it is expected that GMA Network will address the concerns raised by viewers and those affected by the mentioned lines, ensuring a more mindful approach in future productions.
UPDATE: GMA Network Corporate Communications reached out to LionhearTV this morning to inform us that “GMA Asst Vice President for Drama Ali Nokom Dedicatoria has reached out to Mayor Ferdie Estrella on behalf of the writer and the program and they will also meet with him on Monday to deliver the apology letter personally. All’s well that ends well. Thank you.”
