Taiwanese-Australian artist Kimberley Chen made waves in Thailand earlier last month at the annual Big Mountain Music Festival, performing to almost 10,000 people and sharing the same stage with some of Thailand’s biggest music acts, such as Milli, Jeff Satur, Billkin and The Toys, as well as South Korea’s Loco and Yugyeom.
On 10 December 2023, Kimberley Chen became the first Taiwanese female solo artist to perform at the Big Mountain Music Festival, one of Thailand’s largest annual festivals that attracts fans from all over Asia. As a Thai-centric festival, Kimberley is one of the rare foreign acts invited to be a part of this major festival, setting a precedent for more Taiwanese female artists to hopefully grace the festival stage as well in the future.
During her performance on the Block Stage, one of the biggest stages at the festival, Kimberley’s international sound was well-received by the audience, who vibed along to her hit songs, which were mostly performed in English, and cheered loudly when she showcased a glimpse of her new songs that will be released in 2024.
For her set, Kimberley showed her sincerity to impress the festival audiences with a detailed performance that featured a full band and 8 dancers alongside her. The fans were also treated to a pleasant surprise as Thai artist Matcha Mosimann joined her on stage with a collaborative performance.
Following their headline-grabbing joint performance at Taiwan’s KKBOX Music Awards earlier this year that brought attention to their support for pride month, Kimberley and Matcha join forces once again, this time in Thailand, where they performed Miley Cyrus’ ‘Flowers’, an ode to celebrate the power of women and independence.
“It is truly such an honour to be able to perform on this amazing stage to such an amazing crowd! I was blown away by the atmosphere and feeling of belonging and inspiration, thank you to everyone that made it happen,” said Kimberley Chen.
“I’m also very excited to see the artists next year! Crossover collabs like Matcha and I are so much fun and are always something fresh for the audience.”
Besides Thailand, Kimberley Chen also made waves in neighbouring country Singapore earlier this year, performing as part of the key acts of Singapore’s “This Is Live!” concert series, alongside female artists Shi Shi and Pets Tseng, and sharing the stage with her labelmate Jocelyn 9.4.0.
Kimberley said: “Both shows were such amazing experiences! I love being with the audience and the energy is so captivating. Going overseas is always so much fun and I can’t wait for the next time!”
Currently based in Taiwan, Kimberley Chen was born and raised in Australia, but returned to Taiwan to pursue a musical career in Mandopop. With such a diverse background, Kimberley now works with her label Chynahouse to create an international sound that is unique in the Taiwanese scene.
Being able to perform in both English and Mandarin, Kimberley has also attracted fans from all over the world who are able to resonate with her music. She is expected to release more works in 2024 that will continue to bring an international sound to a global audience.
