The film Becky and Badette teaches its viewers something about what matters the most in this day and age. It’s not about the fabricated content creators come up with–but how one remains authentic amid the social media chaos.
At first glance, those who saw Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion (1997) with Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow in the title roles–could easily refer to Eugene Domingo-Pokwang tandem as a copycat. Yes, there may be several similarities, but the Jun Lana-written and directed screenplay showed something new, something relevant these days–going viral online.
If anyone wants to get entertained and have some good laughs while watching a film, Becky and Badette is a good choice for such. Eugene and Pokwang’s comic timing is hilarious. The famous movie lines quoted and incorporated in the dialogues will surely make the audience laugh. There’s no dull moment in the film.
When Pokwang shines in her comedic scenes, Eugene manages to wow the moviegoers with her nuances–showcasing how she has matured as an artist and her versatility as an actress.
Romnick Sarmenta and Agot Isidro also delivered well as supporting stars. Isidro could have [easily] snatched the Best Supporting Award if she was nominated. I got confused by Domingo’s nomination over her. Oh well, I’m not sure how it happened. Until now, I am still trying to wrap my head around it.
Lana’s script may have seen some semblances with Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion–it still appeals to the local moviegoers. After all, the struggles of the two leads resonate well with the audience. Going into reunions can be daunting to many for fear of being compared and ostracized. The viewers must remember that success isn’t about the degrees or accomplishments the graduates have achieved after they leave the learning institution. It is about how the graduates have understood the deeper meaning of life and how they have become better individuals, contributing to the growth of society.
As a comedy film, it provided a venue for the audience to reflect on how to conduct oneself on and off-line. People as online users must realize that what they see online–they should be able to look beyond the glitz, the glamour, the sophistication, and all. Digital creators must learn to use social media platforms to spread good, meaningful, and beneficial content for everyone.
Becky and Badette may have succeeded in their attempt to be successful–they had to go through the painful process of dealing with the truth. Fabricated contents never last long. It has an expiration date.
The film is about friendship and how it can be nurturing and empowering at the same time.
