Unfounded claims regarding the earnings of films participating in the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) have ignited controversy, leading producers to call for vigilance against the spread of misinformation that could harm the local movie industry.
The deceptive rankings suggested that ‘Rewind,’ featuring Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes, clinched the top spot, followed by Piolo Pascual’s ‘Mallari’ and Matteo Guidicelli’s ‘Penduko.’
The social media post asserted that ‘Rewind’ amassed an incredible P110 million, ‘Mallari’ P31 million, and ‘Penduko’ P25 million.
Although the rankings themselves are not entirely implausible, the reported earnings raised skepticism, especially given the absence of official box office figures at the time. The claim that ‘Rewind’ garnered P110 million on its first day was particularly dubious, considering the challenges faced by cinemas amid the ongoing pandemic.
Producers and industry insiders have voiced their concerns, emphasizing the importance of accurate and official reporting to prevent the spread of misleading information.
With no official MMFF earnings data released, audiences are urged to rely on verified information from credible sources to maintain the industry’s integrity.
