In the midst of the Intellectual Property Office’s (IPO) cancellation of the trademark registration for ‘Eat Bulaga,’ TAPE Inc. remains steadfast in its decision to use the title.
However, Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto, and Joey de Leon, the iconic trio behind the show, have called for ‘respect’ towards TAPE Inc. and a cessation of the use of the name ‘Eat Bulaga.’
During a press conference on December 6, the TVJ trio faced inquiries about the possibility of having two separate ‘Eat Bulaga’ shows.
Responding to the question, Joey de Leon made a bold statement, suggesting, “‘Yung tao na ang hahatol niyan eh, mga taumbayan. Well, itutuloy ‘yung sa mga legal. Pero ‘yung mga tao, nakikita mo naman kung ano reaksiyon ng mga tao… Pakapalan na lang.”
Their legal representative, Atty. Enrique dela Cruz, clarified that when the TVJ trio transitioned to TV5, they had the legal right to use the title ‘Eat Bulaga.’
However, they chose to abide by the law and refrain from its use. Atty. Dela Cruz pointed out that TAPE Inc.’s trademark registration specifically covers merchandise, not entertainment or shows. With the IPO’s decision, he stressed that TAPE should also display respect for it.
