During a press conference for the upcoming Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) movie ‘Family of Two (Mother and Son Story)’ with co-star Sharon Cuneta, Alden Richards shared a candid revelation about a challenging period in his life when he battled severe depression.
Alden, known as Asia’s Multimedia Star, admitted to feeling a deep sense of worthlessness and questioning his role in the entertainment industry. He revealed that various problems, including family, business, and career-related issues, had contributed to his emotional struggles.
The actor, who has been part of the entertainment industry for 13 years, confessed that he felt unneeded in the industry during this dark period. However, Alden expressed gratitude for the support he received, particularly from people who helped him realize the inaccuracies in his thoughts.
Reflecting on this difficult time during an interview, Alden explained, “And for the first time after a decade po sa buhay ko, sa mundo ng showbiz, nakaramdam po ako ng ganu’n. Parang I’m feeling worthless, na parang hindi na ako kailangan sa industry, na itong mga taong nakatrabaho ko, nakakasama ko, including GMA, they helped me realize na ‘mali ang iniisip mo.’”
Despite facing such challenges, Alden revealed that he managed to overcome the dark moments without resorting to negative coping mechanisms. He credited his recovery to staying engaged in work and highlighted the therapeutic impact of his projects, including ‘Five Breakups and a Romance’ and ‘Family of Two.’
“Ang sarap lang sa feeling na may mga tao talaga na darating sa buhay mo na talagang makakatulong para maka-recover ka sa mga pinagdaraanan mo. But good thing naman po, I was able to get over that. And hindi po ako napunta du’n sa…hindi ako nagbisyo o nagdroga, whatsoever. Buti na lang po.”
Alden’s upcoming film, ‘Family of Two,’ is one of the entries in the 2023 Metro Manila Film Festival, showcasing his versatility in a heartwarming family story alongside Sharon Cuneta.
