“Softness is not a crime, long live lying flat,” is the band slogan for Soft soft pillow. This band from Malaysia has a diverse mix of Chinese and Malay members, including vocalist and guitarist Wee, guitarist Faridz, synthesizer player Yinn, bassist Jerald, and drummer Ralph.
The cloud-like texture of their music is a result of a year-long collaboration in the virtual realm during the 2020 pandemic isolation. They’ve chosen to share 8 pieces from this creative journey, marking the birth of Soft soft pillow.
They’ve laid open the softest, most vulnerable parts of their hearts, remaining supple without shattering. They long to be heard in their entirety. In addition to singles, they’ve released a full album, making all the tracks available for digital streaming.
With a Dreampop style that wraps around their multicultural influences, Wee, who grew up in a Chinese opera environment, and Faridz, an avid collector of guitar effects pedals deeply influenced by Pop yeh-yeh music, serve as the primary creative forces behind the album.
As a result, the album carries a leisurely South Asian vacation vibe, and it’s highly anticipated after winning the Most Promising Newcomer Award at the 16th Singapore Fresh Music Award TAMA (Southeast Asia Region).
Notably, Soft soft pillow maintains a vintage aesthetic in their music and has released a limited edition collectible physical album titled “Auditory Time Machine” (Walkman Cassette Bundle), catering to music enthusiasts who appreciate the analog, vintage feel. It’s currently selling like hotcakes.
