The excitement and anticipation were palpable as the official entries for the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) 2023 were announced.
Among these entries, the inclusion of ‘When I Met You In Tokyo,’ starring Vilma Santos and Cassy Legaspi, has brought immense joy and gratitude to the film’s team.
Vilma Santos extended her heartfelt thanks to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) for selecting their film for this year’s competition. In a statement, she congratulated the team and expressed her gratitude. “Team of WIMYIT …. CONGRATULATIONS !!! Thank God. Thank you MMFF for the trust!!”
She emphasized the collaborative effort behind the movie, describing it as a simple yet beautiful love story with profound lessons on love, forgiveness, and embracing new chapters in life. She noted that the film underlines the message that love knows no boundaries and encouraged everyone to “fall in love!”
Produced by JG Productions, headed by Rowena Jamaji and Rajan Gidwani, ‘When I Met You in Tokyo’ is a romantic drama that was filmed in Japan. Alongside Vilma Santos, it features Cassy Legaspi and Darren Espanto.
Cassy Legaspi also conveyed her gratitude to the MMFF committee and invited audiences to support all the films featured in the festival. She extended a special invitation to watch ‘When I Met You in Tokyo,’ describing it as a heartfelt movie that elicits laughter, tears, and the belief in boundless love.
The film is scheduled for release on December 25 as part of MMFF 2023.
‘When I Met You In Tokyo’ explores the story of Azon, portrayed by Vilma, known for her boundless generosity, and Joey, depicted by Christopher, a divorced farmer carrying the scars of past heartbreak. The film delves into the themes of unconditional love, sacrifices, and the process of aging from the perspective of two elderly overseas Filipino workers.
The 49th MMFF brings a pleasant surprise by featuring ten films in this year’s competition, deviating from the usual eight entries. The selection was based on completed films, with the second batch of entries, including ‘When I Met You In Tokyo,’ being chosen after the initial announcement of four entries in July.
