On September 26, Kapuso artist Roxie Smith recounted encountering frenemies in beauty pageants.
At the media conference for their Kapuso youth-oriented series, ‘Sparkle U,’ which LionhearTV covered, Smith clarified she didn’t experience bullying or having frenemies in High School.
“Noong nasa school pa po ako, I was blessed with really good friends hindi naman po ako napapaligiran ng Frienemies unlike this show.”
However, when she entered pageantry, she encountered competitive beauty queens.
“Although when I entered pageantry, ayan marami. Kasi siyempre, it’s a competition and maraming competitive na girls who would really go on an extra mile to try and bring you down.”
Smith noted how she maintained a mindset of establishing friendships with other beauty queens instead of responding to their competitiveness.
“Pero, I think it’s really important na kapag may mga situation na ganon, instead of thinking of them as competition, instead of competing with women, ‘yung ka-compete ko na lang is ‘yung sarili ko.
“So china-challenge ko ‘yung sarili, I didn’t really make enemies, kaya ang ending laging Miss Friendship. So ayun, ginagawa ko po silang friends kung hindi ako nakikipag compete.”
As for bullying, Smith admitted she experienced cyberbullying when she joined Miss Earth in 2020, where she got the crown for Miss Philippines Earth 2020.
“Ay relate po ako diyan sa cyber bullying na ine-emphasize namin sa Sparkle U because I used to–I represented the Philippines for Miss Earth and same po kayo Lauren na sinasabi nila na ‘you’re not Filipina enough na bakit ‘yan ‘yung pinapadala ninyo.’
“I’ve always been open to constructive criticisms, pero ‘yung mga walang saysay, parang nahihirapan ako. So ang solusyon diyan, mute talaga or di na magbasa ng comments kung hindi naman makakatulong ‘yung criticisms na binabato nila.”
As for their series, ‘Sparkle U’ includes two stories with #Frenemies and #Ghosted.
