These days even people behind the scene are being celebrated on stage and on record by way of anniversary concerts and tribute albums.
Case in point is that of Rox Santos, the head of StarPop sub-label of Star Music. Over the past 15 years, his work as a record producer and songwriter has garnered him several hit songs and helped previously unknowns become household names.
As a teaser for the anniversary album, Star Music dropped last month a version of “Hanggang Kailan” by Queen of R&B Kyla. The song originally sung by Michael Pangilinan has gotten a good traction and had been featured on different Spotify playlists, namely, Chillax Ka Muna, Sappy & Senti, Tatak Pinoy, and New Music Friday.
The Rox Santos 15th Anniversary Album will feature some of his hit compositions or records he helped successfully produced rendered in new versions.
He shared, “Combination siya ng mga old songs ko na reimagined. It’s a collaboration with different songwriters and artists.” Rox added that half of the album’s content are his original compositions.
Some of the recent big releases that Rox got creatively involved with include “Rampa” by Vice Ganda, “Miss Manila” by Angeline Quinto, “Nasunog” by Khimo, “Hilom” by Moira Dela Torre, and “Road Trip” by Belle Mariano.
If you’d check for Rox’s name on Spotify, you’d probably be surprised that he has has more than 200,000 monthly listeners. That number is high specially for someone relatively working behind the spotlight.
That is good news, too, for the Philippine music scene as it is reflective of the current period when professionals often under-appreciated or barely mentioned in the mainstream press get to share the limelight.
Rox expressed his excitement over the fact that the success of talents like him means there’s a more vibrant music scene out there. He said, “It’s so inspiring to see a lot of great new local artists and exciting new music coming from all fronts.”
As label head, he spearheaded the StarPop PH to various awards and citations, like at the Awit Awards 2022 where Maymay Entrata won Favorite Female Artist and Belle Mariano chosen as Breakthrough Artist, with her song “Sigurado” as Favorite Song.
This year, the 10 million YouTube views of “Amakabogera” earned Entrata the Bronze Wishclusive Elite Circle award, as the song also bagged the Viral Tiktok Music Video of the Year at the VP Choice Awards.
Rox’s 15 years in the music biz will be celebrated with an anniversary concert set at the Music Museum on November 10.
