In a candid interview with Boy Abunda on October 9, Kapuso actor Alden Richards openly admitted that he had developed romantic feelings for his former on-screen partner, Maine Mendoza, during their time together as the AlDub love team.
When discussing the “breakup” of the AlDub tandem, Boy Abunda posed the question, “Did you fall for Maine Mendoza?”
Alden responded, “Yes, Tito Boy. Yes po.”
He went on to say, “Hypocrite po ako kung hindi and yes po, ayoko pong sabihing alam niya, pero I did, I did confess.”
AlDub was a beloved Filipino love team comprising Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza. Their partnership commenced in July 2015 on the noontime variety show ‘Eat Bulaga!’ through the ‘Kalyeserye’ segment. This segment quickly gained immense popularity, attracting millions of viewers who eagerly followed the courtship between Alden and Maine’s character, Yaya Dub.
The skyrocketing fame of AlDub was greatly fueled by social media, with fans using hashtags such as #AlDub and #TamangPanahon to engage in discussions about the love team. Their immense popularity also led to numerous commercial endorsements and product placements.
Throughout 2016, AlDub’s popularity continued to soar as they appeared in various films and television programs. They also released several chart-topping singles.
However, in 2017, AlDub’s popularity started to wane, attributed to various factors, including reduced screen time on ‘Eat Bulaga!’ and rumors of discord between Alden and Maine.
The official breakup of the AlDub love team was announced in 2018 through a joint statement issued by Alden and Maine. They conveyed that they were no longer a compatible love team and expressed their desire to focus on their individual careers.
Maine Mendoza is now married to Arjo Atayde, while Alden Richards remains single.
