Akeem Jahat is back at it again! Ignoring the trends of the times and setting the rhythm to his own flow, Akeem displays his versatility with a new single ‘Master P’, which dropped on Friday, 8 September. Known for his poetic lyrics and smooth delivery, there are no boundaries to his artistry.
After announcing his signing to independent label Cross Ratio Entertainment, the rap mogul released an addictive, pop anthem ‘Tandoori’, bridging the boundaries between rap and pop.
Determined to pave his own path through unconventional means, Akeem is defining what it means to be a hip-hop artist.
The new single contains several cheeky references, the most obvious being that to hip-hop legend Master P.
‘He’s the guy in hip-hop who found his own way and changed the game. You could call him the ultimate hustler,’ Akeem said, describing Master P as someone he looks up to, in both music and his vision as an artist.
‘He’s the unorthodox guy who created his own empire. I realised as I was writing this song that I was subconsciously writing towards that energy.’
The cover artwork also pays tribute to an iconic picture of Master P, donning a white bucket hat, in a blue hoodie adorned with silver chains. Besides that, the ‘P’ in the title also refers to Akeem himself, as a ‘perfectionist’ in his craft of making music.
Akeem crafts his own path to perfection with a new ‘masterpiece’ that draws inspiration from classic soundscapes.
With a distinct, recognisable hook in the song chorus, ‘Master P’ represents a unique cross-over between classical and hip-hop. Akeem manages to seamlessly blend the two seemingly opposing genres, setting a precedent for those after him and staying true to himself.
Similarly to his previous single, ‘Jangan Buang Baju Gua’, which also has elements of classical music weaved into the song, Akeem demonstrates that hip-hop is fluid, and does not need to conform to any style other than his own.
Over the weekend, Akeem performed in Malaysia at Hausboom Music Festival 2023 as Singapore’s standout representative. The festival showcased the region’s biggest acts from Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia, other performers included Joe Flizzow, Hujan and FORCEPARKBOIS.
It also marked his first time performing the new single ‘Master P’ for a live audience, which was met with overwhelmingly positive response from the cheering fans. Akeem also performed crowd favourites like Ribena, $ua and WOODLANDS, featuring special guest Hullera during his set.
He has also made a surprise appearance in Hip Hop producer SonaOne’s set, bringing the audience’s emotions to the highest peak. ‘Master P’ is now available on all digital platforms from Friday, 8 September 2023.
