In a recent interview, actor and politician Alfred Vargas candidly discussed his journey towards quitting smoking and provided valuable insights into his role as a father and husband.
Alfred, known for his notable contributions to the entertainment industry and his dedication to public service, shared his experiences and motivations for embarking on this life-changing journey.
Alfred Vargas acknowledged that his initial encounter with smoking occurred during his high school years. The allure of experimentation, coupled with the influence of peer pressure, led him to try smoking as part of the coming-of-age experience. It was a period marked by self-discovery and the desire to fit in with his peers.
“I’ve always wanted to quit from the start. Di ko lang napansin na naging habit ko na before. My dad was a chainsmoker I didn’t want to be like that,” he shared. “Nung nag aartista nako and making a living na, I told myself that ayokong tumandang naninigarilyo. It’s for my health and well-being, not for anything else.”
The desire to quit smoking had always been present in Alfred’s mind. He was determined not to follow in the footsteps of his father, who was a chain smoker. However, his commitment to quitting grew more resolute when he entered the entertainment industry. At that point, he understood the importance of maintaining his health and well-being for the long term.
Quitting smoking was not without its challenges. Alfred Vargas endured a rigorous two-month withdrawal phase. During this period, he fell ill, experienced heightened irritability, and struggled with diminished focus. To avoid situations that might tempt him to smoke, he chose to stay indoors, even if it meant forgoing short-term enjoyment. He also mentioned that some friends drifted away as they couldn’t relate to his decision.
The primary motivation for Alfred to remain a non-smoker is his deep desire to live a longer, healthier, and happier life for the sake of his family. He yearns to witness his children’s achievements, share in the lives of his future grandchildren, and explore the world alongside his wife.
“Right now, I have this burning desire to try my best to live longer, healthier and happier for my family. I want to see my children graduate, have successful careers of their own, meet my grandchildren and spend time with them. I want to travel the world further with my wifey and family.”
The specter of his mother’s battle with cancer and a family history marred by the disease serves as potent reminders of the importance of a smoke-free lifestyle.
“My mother died of cancer kasi. And so did several of my relatives. Natatakot ako sa cancer coz of this family history. And the best way to minimize my chances is to live a healthy life and stay away from stress.”
Alfred Vargas strongly encourages individuals who wish to quit smoking to act promptly. He emphasizes that there is no better time than the present to make this crucial change. Alfred himself chose the cold turkey approach, opting for an abrupt cessation rather than a gradual reduction.
He recommends surrounding oneself with individuals who share similar health and life goals.
“Do it now. There’s no perfect time for quitting but NOW. You can do it.”
“The way I did it was through cold turkey. I stopped instantly. I remember distinctly that on the night of August 23, 2003, twenty years ago, I smoked my last pack. It’s not easy. The first few days of quitting are manageable but it becomes more difficult as time passes. Hangout with people who don’t smoke. With people who have the same life goals and health goals as you.”
Alfred Vargas has experienced an array of benefits since quitting smoking, including a healthier body, a sharper mind, improved physical fitness, better sleep quality, enhanced mood, and increased energy levels.
When Alfred encounters temptations to smoke, he reminds himself of his past and reflects on the substantial progress he has made in his journey toward a smoke-free life. Although the challenge persists, his determination to overcome it remains steadfast.
“I tell myself, ‘Been there, done that, and I don’t want to be that old self of mine anymore.’ It remains a challenge until today. But it’s a battle I intend to win every time. And so far, 20 years down the road, so far, so good.”
Alfred’s chosen method for quitting smoking was the cold turkey approach, characterized by an abrupt cessation rather than a gradual tapering of the habit.
In addition to his insights on smoking cessation, Alfred Vargas shared valuable details about his family life. He highlighted the spirit of teamwork and support that he and his wife, Yasmine, offer each other, especially during challenging times. Alfred actively embraces parenting roles and contributes to household responsibilities. Through life’s trials and triumphs, their family bond has grown stronger.
