The film’s screenwriter Doy del Mundo, Jr., who will share insights into the creative process behind the film classic, will moderate the discussion.
“We are excited to host this event and talk about this groundbreaking film that helped shape the landscape of Philippine cinema,” said Ms. Yvonne Yuchengco, chair of the Yuchengco Museum. “We hope that through this forum, we will be able to spark a conversation about the issues that the film raises and the importance of preserving our cinematic heritage.”
Maynila Sa Mga Kuko Ng Liwanag follows the story of Julio (Roco), a fisherman from a poor area, who descends into social alienation, as he arrives in Manila to search for his loved one. Considered one of Brocka’s greatest works, the film was hailed as a masterpiece by critics around the world. It also received critical acclaim for its powerful performances by Bembol Roco and Tommy Abuel, who won Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor awards at the 1976 FAMAS Awards.
