As the farewell of ‘Voltes V: Legacy’ draws near, promotion for its upcoming replacement in the timeslot, ‘Maging Sino Ka Man,’ led by Barbie Forteza and David Licauco, is in full swing.
It’s been reported that ‘Voltes V: Legacy’ will say goodbye in September, immediately making way for ‘Maging Sino Ka Man’ in the first timeslot on GMA Telebabad, following the evening news program ’24 Oras.’
The pressure is on for Barbie Forteza and David Licauco, who previously gained popularity as ‘Maria Clara and Ibarra’ playing the roles of Klay and Fidel, respectively, in the same timeslot. The landscape has changed, though, and viewing habits have evolved with the success of the robot series ‘Voltes V: Legacy,’ which has attracted a younger audience.
The theme of ‘Maging Sino Ka Man’ is action-packed and inspired by the 1991 romantic-comedy film about Monique, a famous singer living under the alias Digna to evade her menacing stepfather and stepbrother Gilbert, who caused her mother’s death and wanted her killed for her inheritance. Gilbert discovers her true identity as a waitress and relentlessly pursues her. While evading his henchmen, Monique crosses paths with Carding, a thief, and they fall in love as she stays in his impoverished neighborhood. Eventually, Gilbert and his father are apprehended by the police, Monique reclaims her wealth, and she takes in Carding’s children. Their love prevails in the end.
In terms of nostalgia, it can be compared to ‘FPJ’s Batang Quiapo,’ which is currently dominating the first timeslot in terms of TV ratings and stars Coco Martin.
Several teasers have been circulating on social media, including a scene where Monique (Barbie) and Carding (David) meet for the first time on a dance floor, with Monique dancing energetically to the beat. Other cast members, such as Juancho Triviño, Tonton Gutierrez, and Jean Garcia, have also been featured.
Some have wondered about the title, as ABS-CBN had a successful series with the same title back in 2006, which was followed by a second book. GMA Network’s ‘Maging Sino Ka Man’ is inspired by the 1991 romantic-comedy film of the same title directed by Eddie Rodriguez, which starred Robin Padilla and Sharon Cuneta
