Loren Heat shares their infectious debut single ‘Curiosity’ on 16th August via Quiet Crown. The 20 year old queer singer-songwriter from Middlesbrough teamed up with producer Chad Male (Cape Cub, Llovers, Tom Joshua) to create as bold and confident a debut as you’re likely to hear in 2023.
Musical influences of Dua Lipa and Mabel form a foundation for their dark pop-leaning songs, which in turn are heavily influenced by the north east’s LGBTQIA+community, creating an uplifting alternative for the harder situations in life.
“This song is about the ‘will they, won’t they’ and the frustrations when the person who makes your skin feel a-light and your mind alive won’t be honest with how they feel. You don’t know whether they’re being friendly or flirting and the feeling is tormenting, more-so when the interactions begin to border on lustful and the answers become hazier. This is that confrontation.”
A student at Teesside University, ‘Curiosity’ started life as a uni project before being produced and mixed by Chad Male and mastered by Pete Maher (Lana Del Rey, Goldfrapp, Scissor Sisters).
Loren explains, “I got to work with my friends recording vocals and editing the stems, which was exciting to finally sit and work as a team, using our different knowledge to record something ready for the producer. The bit that shook my spirit slightly was working with Chad the producer; someone new, someone I’d never met, nor spoken to, nor knew anything other than their profession. But it went better than I could’ve expected, making that leap of faith and breaking that barrier is one of the best things I could’ve done, not only for this song but for myself.”
After starting out playing at open mic nights and recording ukulele covers on TikTok, Loren knew they wanted their own original music to be brave, defiant and unashamedly pop. Curiosity sets out the stall for an artist who, with the support of Youth Music’s Incubator Fund and mentoring from Tees Music Alliance, is set to make quite a mark in the thriving north east scene.
