In a recent interview with Morly Alinio on her vlog last July 20, 2023, veteran actress and singer Beverly Salviejo delved into her personal life and showbiz career while cooking an Ilokano dish in her kitchen.
In the second part of the interview, the topic shifted to Beverly’s support for the candidacy of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. during the previous elections, while they were dining.
Morly asked Beverly about her reaction to the apparent “disappointment” expressed by some people towards PBBM (Pangulong Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr.).
Beverly said she didn’t know where the disappointment was coming from because, according to her, PBBM has delivered on various promises, especially regarding housing projects, lowering electricity prices, among others.
However, Beverly couldn’t help but express her own “disappointment.”
She believes that values formation should come from culture. Instead of shows that criticize the government and are anti-Marcos, she wishes that these would end.
Beverly mentioned that even now, their support for PBBM during the elections still affects their chances of getting work or projects. She finds it disheartening that some shows produced today are anti-government, even though they are funded by the government. “Pagka-anti government, saan kami doon na mga sumuporta? Kami po yung mga nabash, kami po yung mga nadiscriminate, kami yung mga namura, kami yung mga inayawan, ayaw bigyan ng trabaho, na-cancel…”
Because of this, no one wants to hire artists who expressed their support for the UniTeam during the previous elections.
Morly asked Beverly if she regrets her decision to support PBBM back then. “Hindi. During that time, siya talaga yung pinakamagandang choice. Wala tayong… ano, gusto ninyo pipili ako ng… dahil lang sa ganito… when it was my time to do my choice, pumili po ako ng nasa utak ko na siyang pinakamahusay for the job. Now, if he will fall short, hindi ako yun, nasa kaniya yun. Siya ang may dala no’n,” Beverly explained.
Beverly stated that if she could sit down with the president, she would appeal to him to give a fighting chance to the artists who supported him. “Dami namin, 31M kami, bakit ngayon parang hindi kami masyadong importante.”
She observed that there are “Dilawan” individuals seen in the company of the president at the Palace and other places.
So Beverly’s plea to PBBM is to focus more on culture and the arts to further mold the values formation of the youth and citizens, making them love the country even more.
