On April 25, actor-director Ricky Davao recalled how legendary filmmaker and the late Lino Brocka guided him as an actor.
At the media conference for Seed of Love, which LionhearTV covered, Davao cited how he adopted Brocka’s directing style on the set of the Kapuso series.
“Sometimes kasi, I’m also an actor so naiinggit ako so gusto kung gawin. Minsan kapag ano sinasabi ko, ‘Parang ganito ‘yung effect.’ I experienced that before with the late Lino Brocka na aartehin niya sa harapan mo tapos, sasabihin niya, ‘No. no, no. don’t follow me ha, don’t follow me ha. I’m like this, but do it in your own way, but this is the effect that I want.’ So ‘yun din ang ginagawa ko sa kanila.”
Earlier, he voiced his thoughts on how draining it was for the actors to do emotional scenes.
“It’s normal naman tao lang tayo, napapagod, nade-drain, di ba lalo na ‘yung iyak ng iyak. Talagang ano ‘yan, kumbaga ang sabi, natutuyuan din tayo ng luha ganon. Mayroong ibang actors talaga na gifted na isang ano mo lang, tumatalsik ‘yung luha. Pero, kaunting kaunti talaga ‘yung ano.”
He then praised the main cast for Seed of Love for their talents as actors.
“My actors here, sila Glaiza, Mike, and Valerie, magaling na kasi sila eh. Tapos natural naman na napapagod, so siguro, hindi ko lang sila prine-pressure na gawin ‘to. Mas open lang kami, hindi naman in our own time, kasi talagang we’re given so much ano ngayon eh sa taping eh, like 14-15 hours lang, 16 hours lang to finish so many sequences. So hindi naman kami papetik-petik. Pero, kailangan billisan din natin.”
He also detailed how he guides his actors to find their motivations, especially after an intensely emotional and draining scene.
“So, hindi rin naman sila on off na gripo na ba bukas ang gripo, o cut, patay ang gripo. Hindi ganon. So it really takes– ‘yung mayroon naman kasi nakapag-work shop, mayroon kaming pinag huhugutan na iba-iba.
“May pwede personal na experience, experience ng good friend mo, best friend mo, or peg sa sine o sa TV, or nabasa mo sa libro. So marami naman kaming ways to do it. Pero ang guidance lang talaga is always ang foundation natin ay totoo at mapapanindigan natin ‘yun.”
