On February 2, the chairman of the Herbalife Nutrition Advisory Board, Dr. Kent L. Bradley, shared details about dietary recommendations for children below 11 years old.
At the media conference for Herbalife, Bradley recommended that parents focus on providing protein-rich food.
“First [off,] children, especially children under [the age of] 11, are still growing. They’re still changing. It is [difficult] to begin to– I would never suggest to– [begin] to restrict in that age group. And that’s why our products are specifically not aimed at that age group.
“But on our philosophy, if you follow the philosophy, I think, over time, you would see some transformation. First [off,] we believe in the power of macronutrients, the pre-eminence of protein over three. So getting sufficient protein in our diet, [it ensures] that our cells get what it needs, the amino acids in our livers, but it also packs a more powerful punch because it satisfies, it reduces hunger.
“And it also has the same amount [of] calories as carbohydrates [in a] per gram basis. So four calories to four calories, but you get a [bigger] benefit [with the sense.] That’s why we suggest that 30% of your diet would be in the form of protein.”
He also suggested introducing carbs-filled fiber instead of sweetened products.
“So when they–do have carbohydrates, we believe in the carbohydrates that often give you the thing that we lack, which is fiber. So if you’re going to eat a lot, I don’t want to cast dispersion on a lot of products, but if you’re going to have sodas, sweetened drinks, and that really a lot of carbohydrates in the form of sugar, but really no nutritional value, we surprisingly get a lot of calories in sweetened [drinks] and so cutting that out, will eventually change one’s taste bud.
“So if your going to have carbs, have carbs with fiber. So what are carbs with fiber. It wouldn’t be any single, sweetened drinks. It wouldn’t be the cakes or pastries. They don’t have fiber– it’s refined flour. What would have the fiber would be whole fruits, vegetables, without the sauce, because the sauce has fats that are not needed.”
He also highlighted the significance of focusing on hydration and exercise.
“The other suggestion–I would say is that we are a big believer in hydration and exercise.”
Earlier, Herbalife Nutrition and Herbalife Nutrition Foundation initiated their Nutrition for Zero Hunger (NFZH) campaign with The Global FoodBanking Network to alleviate hunger in nearly 50 countries.
