Dr. Noel Lumbo of the University of the Philippines – Los Baños (UPLB) received the Outstanding Young Scientist Award from the Asian-Australian Association of Animal Production (AAAP) during the latest AAAP Animal Science Congress in Jeju, South Korea.
Dr. Lumbo was recognized for his study on the effects of Ulva Lactuca powder as a replacement for inorganic trace minerals on the production performance of broilers from 1 to 35 days old. Using completely randomized design of three dietary treatments, Dr. Lumbo was able to show that the addition of 1% Ulva lactuca powder was able to replace trace minerals in the diet without having adverse effect on body weight gain, average daily gain, feed intake and feed conversion ratio of the broilers.
The Ulva Lactuca species, also known as sea lettuce, is an edible seaweed with a range of health-promoting bioactive components. It grows rampantly in many beaches in the Philippines.
