On January 30, Darna director Benedict Mique Jr recounted his experience working on the first Darna adaptation on TV.
At the media conference for the finale of Mars Ravelo’s Darna, Mique considered working on ABS-CBN’s interpretation of the superheroine as a ‘full-circle moment’ as a filmmaker.
“Tsaka it’s a full circle moment for me because I was part of the first Darna, TV show na Darna, na si Angel Locsin, I was part of the creative din. So ang saya na ngayon– sa GMA ‘to, and now I’m directing.”
He then cited how much creative freedom they had as creatives in their adaptation of Darna.
“As a filmmaker, Darna was a play ground na sobrang sarap maglaro. Minsan ka lang magkakaroon ng ganitong show na ibibigay sayo lahat ng resources to play with, as a filmmaker, it was an absolute playground.”
Aside from his experience directing the Kapamilya fantaserye, Mique also discussed the impact of their TV show on their viewers, especially with Darna‘s online reception.
“Grateful, sobrang grateful. Tsaka to be honest, ang sarap– ang sarap ng feeling kasi as– may dalawa akong anak. It’s also touching because it really affects you kasi na-invite ako sa U.P. to talk, ngayon sa [St.] Benilde, so may mga talks because of Darna.
“And sa iba’t ibang mga bansa because like what I’m saying, hindi lang tayo sa free TV, kundi number one online. Tatak ninyo ‘yun. We are number one online, we are the most searched, we are the most watched. Kahit pagsama-samahin mo TV show ng kung ano man, hindi mo maabot ‘yun.”
Mars Ravelo’s Darna stars Jane De Leon, Zaijian Jaranilla, Joshua Garcia, and Janella Salvador.
