The Kapuso actor considers his new role as a career-defining turn, as it marks a ‘huge jump’ from the usual roles he previously portrayed.
Miguel Tanfelix considers playing Steve Armstrong, his most challenging role yet. Armstrong is the lead character in Voltes V Legacy, the highly-anticipated Filipino TV adaptation of the anime classic, Voltes V.
During the GMA Regional TV-hosted press conference held in Iloilo City, on January 21, the so-called Kapuso Ultimate Heartthrob, expressed his utter excitement for the show’s nearing debut, calling his role as a big jump from the ones he previously portrayed.
“Ako ‘yung naatasang mag-lead ng ‘Voltes’ team. Bale kapag nag-transform—nag-volt in lahat ng space ships, ako ‘yung nasa ulo, ” he told the press, introducing his character.
Having already played numerous roles before the pandemic hit in 2020, Tanfelix admitted that he had challenges while preparing for the role.
“Kasi nagstart kami magprepare for Voltes V, halos lahat kami nasa pandemic. So ito ‘yung time na bawal kang lumabas, di ka makapag-training,” he shared, adding his focus got shifted to studying popular male roles in movies and TV shows, to find the suitable approach on his character.
“So, ang ginawa ko, ang pinaka-preparation ko is manood ng mga (shows na may) male-dominated characters. Kumuha ako ng mga inspirasyon ‘don, kasi ‘yung mga characters na ginagampanan ko dati, medyo bata eh, bata ang atake, pa-tweetum. Ganon ang nasanay kong character, so itong Voltes V, huge jump,” he shared.
As one of his home Network’s most talented male stars, Tanfelix has taken on many roles, but with a limited range of approaches. He admitted that some changes must be done, and he is thankful to Voltes V Legacy for allowing him to depart from the techniques he relied upon for a very long time.
“Kinailangan kong malaman ang mga bagong techniques, bagong klase ng pag-atake, dahil feeling ko bukod sa pag-momotor and paghawak ng baril, feeling ko kung ang parte ko ay parang patweetums parin, feeling ko hindi magwowork ‘yung character.”
He also took his chance to ease the worry of some viewers, who fear that this live-action TV adaptation might turn out just another soap opera.
“Hindi siya soap opera na sampalan, kidnapan, hostage-an. Wala, walang ganon. ‘Yung acting kung paano sa totoong buhay, ganoon din ang ni-rerequire ni Direk Mark, ” he told the press, reassuring the viewers that the new series will be nothing like they’ve used before.
