The GMA Sparkle star proudly claimed that the series he stars in will deliver a more “humanized” take on the well-loved anime classic.
Matt Lozano is savoring his time in showbiz these days, as he is undoubtedly one of those personalities many in the industry have their attention fixed on.
As Robert Armstrong, a.k.a. Big Bird, which he plays in the highly-anticipated live action TV adaptation, the 30-year-old star, who has appeared in several projects previously, is poised to win and melt hearts.
The Kapuso actor had the chance to introduce himself and his role to Kapuso viewers in Iloilo, which the show and its cast visited last week. Their visit also coincided with the GMA Regional TV press conference, held in Jaro, last January 21, to promote the show.
Lozano expressed, “Ako ay pangalawa sa magkakapatid na Armstrong brothers. Si Big Bird, simula nang iwan kami ng tatay namin, dati siyang masayahin tapos naging malungkot si Big bird—naging loner kumbaga,” he told the press, sharing the role has a big skill set, as it is a martial arts expert.
He added, “He also has a big heart, at medyo kwela na character.”
Big Bird is noticeably larger than his fellow team members, in terms of body size. During the press conference, the actor did not take any offense, when asked if he tried to maintain his weight, in preparation for his role.
He shared that he actually had to eat a lot to keep his weight the same as the role he portrays. The actor revealed, “Before ako mag-audition nang sinabihan ako merong audition for Big Bird, naghanap muna ako ng Arnis grand master. Sabi ko bago ako mag-audition, dapat handa ako. Kasi ‘di ba, noong napanood ko ‘yung anime, sabi ko kailangan ko ng moves, para ‘pag nag-audition ako maganda na ‘yung galaw ko.”
Lozano told the press that one of his most intense preparations was learning how to do cinematic stunts. He did not deny that he was terrified when he realized the scope of his character, and the show, itself. “Nandoon ‘yung kaba, kasi this is my first big character na mapoportray ko, so grabe ‘yung pressure na naramdaman ko nung nakuha ko ‘to, ” he said.
Lozano believes that GMA Network’s live-action series will showcase a “modernized” take on the well-loved classic. He explained, “Siguro ang mai-ooffer naming bago ngayon ay modernized version ng Voltes V. Hindi lang ‘yung robot, kundi pati ‘yung mga characters namin, kasi mas humanized ‘yung pagportray namin dito,” he shared, noting how the characters in the anime series are purely two-dimensional.
