With the continued rise in food prices, even celebrities are feeling its “painful” effects.
In his Instagram story on December 28, comedian-host and talent manager Ogie Diaz shared his shock at the skyrocketing prices of onions.
He even joked about cooking “sinigang na sibuyas,” since its price is higher than pork and beef.
Diaz exclaimed, “Wow! Php600 na pala ang kilo ng sibuyas, totoo ba? Mas mahal pa sa kilo ng karneng baboy at baka? Paano kaya gawin yung sinigang na sibuyas na may sahog na baboy?”
Aside from Diaz, another comedian and TV writer, Alex Calleja, also shared his reaction to the high price of onions.
In an Instagram post on December 29, Calleja joked that he now understands why Ferdinand Magellan had to explore the world just to find spices.
Calleja remarked, “Sa mahal ng sibuyas, naintindihan ko na si Magellan bakit siya umikot sa buong mundo para maghanap ng spices!”
Meanwhile, Kapamilya star Nikko Natividad joined the conversation by commenting on Calleja’s post and saying the price of an onion itself can make people cry.
Natividad said, “Hindi mo pa hinihiwa naiiyak ka na.”
The price of red onions has soared to as high as 720 pesos per kilo, according to recent monitoring by the Department of Agriculture (DA).
DA Spokesman Rex Estoperez, meanwhile, advised consumers to buy fewer quantities of onions if they cannot afford to buy 1 kilo.
Estoperez explained, “To be reasonable on that and practical — pero mukhang maraming magagalit sa ‘kin — e ‘di ‘wag tayong bumili ng isang kilo, di ba? Kung ano lang ang makakaya nating bilhin, ayun muna.”
