ABS-CBN shutdown significantly contributed to the decline in TV viewing in 2022

The shutdown of ABS-CBN is said to have contributed significantly to the country’s decline in TV viewing in 2022.

According to a report shared on Twitter by Zhander Cayabyab on Friday, November 11, Kantar Media’s survey result showed a 15% decline in TV viewing in the Philippines from 94% in 2019 to 89% in 2022.

According to the same survey results, former TV viewers have shifted to social media, as evidenced by a 17% increase in online viewing from 59% to 79%.

Meanwhile, in the following tweet, Cayabyab shared Kantar’s findings that ABS-CBN’s shutdown was one of the factors that led to the decline in TV viewing.

Kantar found out that TV viewing in 2022 was much lower compared to the years when ABS-CBN was still on free TV.

The Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2021 previously reported a drop in Philippine TV viewing, which they also attributed to the ABS-CBN shutdown.

According to the report, television viewing in the country is expected to fall by 5% to 61% by 2020. While the global average increased due to pandemic lockdowns, which allowed people to watch more TV, the opposite occurred in the Philippines due to ABS-forced CBN’s shutdown in May 2020.

Following the expiration of its broadcast franchise and the subsequent denial of its franchise application in Congress, ABS-CBN was forced to close in 2020.

Since then, the network has migrated to digital platforms and collaborated with other networks on block-time arrangements.
