Actor Sam Milby spoke candidly on the negative effects of “online flexing” and the toxic way that the younger generation is relying too heavily on social media approval at the Star Magic Flex MediaCon on October 25.
Milby said, “When is it not good to flex? For me it’s when, let’s say, you’re confident with a certain thing you do. But it’s making someone else look bad.”
He remarked that when someone is struggling at anything one does not have to intentionally comment, “Oh, I’m going to outshine them so much” for them to feel humiliated.
The actor-model talked about his inactivity in social media and said it’s a personal choice, given that social media has its downfall. In fact, he said he only made two posts on social media last year.
Milby added, “Ang problema sa social media… it’s so toxic also. We live in a society where we love to judge, we love to hide behind some profile. Maybe even if you know it’s a troll.”
Aside from the troll and bashing, the actor-model also opened up about the toll it takes on the younger generation being so caught up in social media validation. He emphasized that the misuse of social media platforms has led to a sharp increase in the number of young people experiencing depression (and suicide instances).
The heartthrob Milby is the newest cover of Star Magic’s digital magazine Flex, alongside Gerald Anderson.
