Musician-scriptwriter Mcoy Fundales pointed out on Tuesday, August 16, that the rise of digital platforms created an opportunity for amateur singers to get as much exposure and reach as professionals have.
“Sa akin, ang sagot ko diyan, patas. Patas ang labanan ngayon. Kasi an amateur singer can upload his work online as much as the old timers, the professional ones, can upload theirs,” said Fundales during the virtual media conference for his comeback single Ang Forever Ko’y Ikaw.
The only thing that separates professionals from amateurs is the “material.”
The singer explained in front of the press, including LionhearTV, “Minsan, hindi ganoon ka-professional ang recording pero kung ang ganda-ganda ng kanta, sisikat. Kasi and’yan siya sa online eh. Ikaw naman, matagal ka na sa industriya, professional ka na, pero kung ‘yung song mo naman doesn’t have as much recall [kaysa] sa ginawa nung amateur, talo ka.”
The musician stressed that the only advantage of recording artists like himself is that they have recording labels.
“I believe na ‘yung mga online musicians, halatang-halata na ano eh, they know what they’re doing na rin naman. So it’s fair play,” he added.
Meanwhile, the emergence of social media platforms helped Fundales realize that there are a lot of undiscovered creative people. The musician admittedly revealed that he occasionally watches videos on TikTok to get some ideas for a skit or a song.
“Once na nanunuod ako, nuod-nuod lang, casual watching lang, biglang, pang! Idea sa Pepito, pang! Idea sa Bubble Gang, pang! Idea for a song.”
Will he follow the trend and start making content online? The musician shared that he cannot do it alone.
“Talagang I can’t keep up with it. Una sa lahat, mas nae-enjoy ko yung behind—hindi ako on-cam. Awkward ako eh. I don’t see myself shooting videos of myself. So I’d rather make content be behind the camera.”
He, however, is open to making content, with the help of his children, of course.
“As far as putting up content, I’m open to it lalo na kung tutulungan ako ng anak ko na mas sanay sa mga ganyan-ganyan.”
