On August 2, Kapuso singer talked about being a GI Baby and landing his GI Role in Miss Saigon.
Bolden had a virtual meeting with select members of the entertainment press, including LionhearTV, and detailed how he got the role of John Thomas in the theater production of Miss Saigon in Guam.
The Kapuso singer recounted the song he used for his audition and how it connected with his experience as a GI Baby.
“Actually, hindi ko pa po nga memorized ‘yung song that time. What I did was I sang while looking at the lyrics. Pero po talaga ‘yung first time ko narinig ‘yung song na– which is also ‘yung audition piece ko, ‘yung Bui Doi.
“It hit me somewhere din, kasi the song is actually relatable para sa akin kasi I had this time din– that I was looking for my real dad.”
He then revealed how proud his biological father and stepfather would have been with the role he got in the theater production.
“Unfortunately po, my Dad passed away a couple of years ago, and this year din po my stepfather passed away so– but I know na proud po sila sa akin at sa lahat po ng ina-achieve ko po at inaabot ko po.”
Bolden’s manager Vic Del Rosario disclosed that the producers liked the Kapuso singer’s backstory.
“Our initial meetings with the producer, one thing they liked about Garrett is his story din no. Kasi nga, we all know naman, GI Baby si Garrett. So, medyo close ‘yung story sa Miss Saigon kay Garrett. Kumbaga, parang ito ‘yung legit talaga na GI talaga. ‘Yung isa sa mga cast nila. So that’s one of the deciding factors noong mga producers, noong kinewento ni Garrett ‘yun, talagang natuwa sila kasi ito may legit talaga kami.”
Bolden gained popularity as one of the finalists of The Clash Season 1, which led to him becoming one of the mainstay performers of All-Out Sundays.
