In the press conference of the upcoming Beks Battalion concert Beks 2 Beks 2 Beks, Chad Kinis revealed on Friday, July 22, that it was he who suggested co-members MC Muah and Lassy Marquez team up with him in bringing joy to Filipinos.
Before making strides as Beks Battalion, the three have been friends, working as stand-up comedians at Comedy Bar. MC and Lassy treated Chad as “anak-anakan.”
“Actually, kami ni Lassy ang nauna. Kasi mas matanda kami kay Chad. Tapos si Chad, anak-anakan namin sa Comedy Bar. Kasi 2010 pa lang, siya ang kinukuha kong writer kapag may special show kami sa Comedy Bar,” shared MC.
He added, “So hindi ako pumapayag na hindi ko siya writer lagi. Kasi napaka-brilliant ng mind niya. So doon kami nagsimula talaga, doon kami nagsama-sama.”
Chad was the first among the three to be a YouTuber.
After finding success on the video-sharing site, he first invited MC.
“Opo, nag-YouTube na ako noon. Tapos noong nagyu-YouTube ako, nakakita ako… I’m seeing results sa pag-YouTube ko kahit papaano.
“Tapos si MC, sinabihan ko po. Sabi ko, Kuya MC mag-vlog ka. Kasi magaling kang tsumika, energetic ka, malinaw kang magsalita, kaya mong mag-vlog,'” recalled the comedian.
However, it took one year before MC decided to give in to Chad’s prodding. His condition: add Lassy to the group.
“Tapos dinededma niya ako. Siguro inabot ng isang taon. Tapos February 2020, sabi niya, ‘Sige, subukan natin. Pero isama natin si Lassy para tatlo tayo.'”
In deciding the group’s name, Chad said that they got it from the Filipino hip hop collective Ex-Battalion.
To make it their own, and to represent themselves as “bekis,” they then added “Beks.”
“Ano ang pangalan natin? Eh parang kaputukan ng Ex-Battalion. So sabi ko, tutal mga bakla naman tayo so Beks Battalion.”
Fast forward to today, they found success as Beks Battalion and will have their first-ever physical concert to be held at the New Frontier Theater on August 26.
Their guests are Vice Ganda, Bugoy Drilon, Daryl Ong, Michael Pangilinan, Zeinab Harake, Jelai Andres, Ate Guy, and Buboy Villar, among others.
