The series jump-started Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla as a love team, and it paved the way for subsequent projects in movies and television.
While Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla first worked together via the weekend youth-oriented series, Growing Up (2011), the couple did not have their launching TV series until 2012. Princess and I that they starred alongside Kahlil Ramos and Enrique Gil, as it premiered on Primetime Bida on April 16, 2012.
The series featured an ensemble cast and was shot both in the Philippines and the South Asian country of Bhutan. The story’s setting is the fictional kingdom of Yangdon.
In the series–Bernardo played Princess Areeyah Wangchuck-Rinpoche or Mikay to her adoptive parents and siblings. Unbeknownst to those who knew her, Mikay is a real-life royalty who got separated from her [real] parents. Ashi Behati Rinpoche (Gretchen Barretto) of Yangdon was the onw who ordered to ambush Mikay’s family when she was just a baby.
A Filipino woman who was a royal servant to Yangdon’s first family managed to save the baby and took her when she went back to the Philippines. A twist of fate, however, brought the baby to the care of Mang Dinoy (Dominic Ochoa), who raised the child as if she was his own.
According to Kantar Media, Princess and I is one of 2012’s highest-rated series and peaked at 40.6% nationwide household ratings. Due to the viewers’ warm reception for KathNiel’s tandem and its massive success, the pair were given their launching film, Must Be… Love in 2013.
The series also allowed Enrique Gil and Kahlil Ramos to take off in their careers, with Gil eventually finding his love team in then fast-rising young actress Liza Soberano.
