“Supreme Court junks appeal of newscaster Mel Tiangco’s illegal dismissal and illegal suspension case vs ABS-CBN over her appearance in a TV commercial in 1995. SC affirms the 2012 CA ruling, which approved a 2011 partial settlement agreement between Tiangco and ABS-CBN,” the caption said.
The settlement agreement details Tiangco’s salary after being suspended on TV Patrol and Mel and Jay (TV), 13th-month pay, and travel allowance.
Tiangco also wished for separation pay, damages, and attorney’s fees.
According to the decision of the Supreme Court, Tiangco is not eligible to receive separation pay because she was an independent contractor and not a regular employee of the network.
Tianco served as an anchor on TV Patrol from 1987 to 1995. She transferred to GMA Network in 1996 because she was suspended without pay as an anchor on TV Patrol after her endorsement with Tide laundry detergent.
ABS-CBN sued Tianco, Jay Sonza, and the GMA Network.
