On March 16, actress Mickey Ferriols recalled her body-shaming experience in the early 2000s when she hosted a noontime show.
During the media conference for Ang Babae sa Likod ng Face Mask, Ferriols detailed some of the negative remarks she heard about her body early on in her career.
“Siguro in the past noong nagma-Masayang Tanghali Bayan kami, noontime show. I would always get comment na, ‘Ay ang taba, ang taba ni Mickey.’
“‘Yung mga times na ‘yun na, ‘Ay ang taba pala ni Mickey.’ Tapos pag minsan napapanood ko ngayon, that was early 2000s, oh my gosh hindi naman ako mataba.
“Ang payat ko naman, medyo maliit naman ‘yung bewang ko, maliit naman ‘yung arms ko. ‘Yun ‘yung time na parang medyo nakaka-affect sa sayo na, ‘Oh my gosh, ang taba ko yata. Ang laki yata ng mukha ko.’ Ganyan.”
She then added that her maturity over the years helped her change her mindset on how she perceives herself and others.
“Pero over the years, parang mare-realize mo na there’s more to you than just being fat, being ganito, being ganyan. There is more to that. Kaya habang tumatanda talaga tayo lumalalim ‘yung paniniwala natin, ‘yung idea natin about ourselves, about people, and how we are not supposed to judge them according to the physical.”
She then shared her realization of valuing character over physical beauty.
“Physical that’s very shallow eh. Ang magandang makita ‘yung talagang puso, ‘yung pagkatao, ‘Oy ang bait mo pala. Ay ang saya mo pala kasama. Uy ang lalim pala mag-isip.’ So ‘yun ‘yun.”
Ferriols joins the cast of Ang Babae sa Likod ng Face Mask. The digital series stars Herlene Budol, Joseph Marco, Kiray Celis, Hasna Cabral, and others.
