Why You Should See It:
A mother’s love shines in iWantTFC’s latest mini-series, which stars seasoned dramatic actress Sylvia Sanchez. After playing several mother roles in the past, the most remarkable of which remain top-rated and critically-acclaimed afternoon dramas, The Greatest Love (2016) and Hanggang Saan (2017), Sanchez takes on a yet another parent role. But in Misis Piggy, she sheds light upon the sacrifices of a single parent, who goes to unfathomable lengths to fulfill her duties.
Marivic (Sanchez), or Miss Piggy to her patrons, is a meat shop owner who has successfully raised her three kids by herself. She is a loving and hardworking mother who dedicates all her time in the world to running and expanding her shop, all so she can provide for her family. But like any other parent in the world, time is not on Marivic’s side; she can only hold on for a while to her duties. But as her children mature and start navigating their own lives, she also begins seeing a glimpse of her future life: left out by her own children.
More complications knock on Marivic’s doorsteps when her children decide to reconnect with their estranged father, Rupert (Ricky Davao), and when they start pursuing opportunities overseas. Her eldest daughter–Lani (Ria Atayde), is about to join her boyfriend in Canada and work as a nurse there. Steffi (Iana Bernardez) plans to pursue a master’s degree in the United States. Her youngest Jeffrey (Eliajh Canlas), intends to get an internship in Australia to complete his studies. A theft in the household and Jeffrey’s devastating car accident further worsen her burden.
Having showcased her massive artistry in her previous projects, Sanchez no longer surprises on how impressively she breathed Marivic to life. The amount of emotions she is able to deliver through the role, testifies to her unquestionable brilliance, and gives a more solid proof of what she can muster through her singular talent. That said, how her daughter, Ria Atayde, is able to meet her with an equal intensity in those scenes where their character clash also deserves commendation. It is the same respect that award-winning actor Elijah Canlas earns, even for a single tear jerking scene, when he wakes up in a hospital bed and finds out his boyfriend died.
Storywise, Misis Piggy moves along well, narrating a heartwarming and sometimes, heartrending, tale of parenthood, and of how much a single love can transform lives and heal wounded hearts. The mini-series can also be remembered for its beautiful take on second chances, and how those who have been eager of getting one, make the best of it when it lands on their lap.
