This new iWantTFC series follows a chubby teenager trying to lose weight to win the affection of the boy she likes.
It is no ‘200 Pounds Beauty’, judging the pilot episode, but there is undeniably warmth and charm that merit a second or even more viewing.
Thea, a chubby teenager, is in her last year as a senior high-schooler. She is a self-confessed food addict, noting it is the love of her life. Six months before her 18th birthday, her childhood crush, Lucas (Akira Morishita) returns to town, awakening her long-harbored admiration.
She enlists the help of her best friend Julian (KD Estrada), with whom she comfortably says everything she wants. Often picked on by bullies because of her weight, Thea doesn’t seem bothered until she finds out her crush is not into chubs.
Bola Bola is not a new story, even in the context of coming-of-age dramas. Adult viewers are most likely not to find an amiable sparkle in this cutesy teenage tale, but the younger viewers are surely going to swoon big time. The series marks Francine Diaz’s first iWantTFC series-starrer, although it’s worth noting she already appeared in Bawal Lumabas: The Series and in a Click Like Share episode.
Here, she has three all-good-looking leading men vying for her attention. It is practically a test to look for the male half of her next love team.
Filled with sheer warmth, heart, and some humor too, Bola Bola looks completely poised to not just only render smitten fans dying in ‘kilig’, but also impart some valuable lessons about self-acceptance and self-discovery. Of course, we all know that this is still about a chubby girl who succeeded in making her diet and workout routines work. While that is true, there are certainly a lot more to look forward to in this series. BGYO fans are sure to root for their boy, Akira Morishita, while PBB Kumunity Season 10 lovers are most likely to take KD Estrada’s side. Ashton Salvador, who is currently inside the Pinoy Big Brother house, will have a harder time to impress for sure, but his character Josh, may likely give him a favor.
That said, the most important star of the series is Diaz, and to her credit, she is owning it. Her Thea is charming, fun, and easy to root for. The young actress has had an exemplary display of her dramatic skills in her previous projects. Bola Bola is more likely to explore her lighter, comedic side more, but Thea’s sappy background that tells why she gained so much weight, should still showcase her dramatic brilliance.
