Undoubtedly the most successful and most loved season of ABS-CBN’s Saturday fantasy drama anthology ‘Komiks,’ and launched the PBB Teens’ alumnus Matt Evans’s career and catapulted him to household fame.
Pinoy Big Brother has unquestionably some of the current generation’s biggest movie and television stars. Now in its 17th year being on-air, PBB has opened its doors to millions of showbiz aspirants, although very few were given the chance. Among the most popular stars to emerge from the reality show include Gerald Anderson, Sam Milby, Zanjoe Marudo, Robi Domingo, and Maymay Entrata, although Kim Chiu will probably get a crown on her head as being the most successful alumna of the show.
Chiu isn’t the only teen housemate who rose to mainstream popularity after their PBB stint. Matt Evans, who was also a housemate in the first teen edition of the reality show, also starred in his show and managed to break through mainstream fame.
In 2006, just a few months after exiting from the PBB house, ABS-CBN tapped Evans to become the lead star of the network’s TV adaptation of Francisco Coching’s classic Komiks title. In the show, Evans played the titular Pedro Penduko who got drawn into the world of the engkantos, or the ‘Dalaket’. A magical amulet he inherited from his parents became his superpower to fight magical beings including vampires, aswangs, and other mythical Filipino creatures.
The show was an instant hit among Filipino households as it posted the highest ratings ever achieved by a Komiks episode. The show was extended several times and lasted on air for two years. Da Adventures of Pedro Penduko’s ensemble cast include Albert martinez, Gloria Romero, Melissa Ricks, Jake Cuenca, Agot Isidro, Kitkat, Niña Jose, Olyn Meimban, bembol Roco, DJ Durano, TJ Trinidad, and Mico Palanca. Because of the show’s “freak of the week” scheme, different big stars of ABS-CBN, guested the show. A sequel, titled Pedro Penduko at Ang Mga Engkantao, expanded the show’s original narrative and featured several more stars as the show’s leads.
