Why You Should See It:
Think about this: the last full-fledged news parody show to grace Philippine television, aired its last episode, nearly 15 years ago. The Toni Gonzaga and Vhong Navarro-hosted news satire, ‘Wazzup Wazzup’ ran for more than three years on Studio 23, from March 1, 2004-July 20, 2007. The program was largely recognized for taking part in Gonzaga’s eventual transfer to ABS-CBN from GMA Network in 2005.
It’s worth noting that news parodies and political satires never really left local television. Gag shows like Bubble Gang and Banana Sundae featured them as segments. That said, standalone news parody shows kept their absence in the local setting until this year, when Buko Channel, a sister channel of TV5 under Cignal TV, debuted BalitaOneNan.
Presented by comedian-hosts, KaladKaren, Wally Bayola, and Alex Calleja, BalitaOneNan pokes fun at current events by delivering news with comedic elements. The show marks the first time the three comedians are joining together for a show, so it is really interesting how their working dynamics will turn out and eventually allow the show to attract more audiences since it is currently showing on Buko, which is a pay-TV channel
As the Philippines races towards the conclusion of the current election season, much of the show’s segments reflect the political climate of the country. Parody personalities of the 2022 presidentiables are usual features of the show. Spoof of the recent presidential debates is a delight for viewers, as well as gag skits that mirror relatable moments of Filipinos during the pandemic.
It remains to be seen whether or not BalitaOneNan will serve its purpose for the long run. News satires are known to bring social awareness to their audiences, more than the entertainment they usually provide. That said, the show is already a good start and shows promise that Philippine television has been evolving. In a time of universal deceit, fake news, and misinformation, BalitaOneNan is a welcome effort to educate viewers about our current political affairs, which may be beneficial in our quest to select the most righteous leaders.
BalitaOneNan airs on Buko Channel from Mondays to Fridays. Watch the official teaser below, and don’t forget to share your thoughts in the comment section:
