Lobo is an award-winning supernatural drama aired by ABS-CBN in 2008.
On January 28, 2008, three new shows premiered on ABS-CBN’s Primetime Bida block.
An omnibus plug was released early, that featured the three new shows and the then-already airing Maging Sino Ka Man: Ang Pagbabalik. These three shows are Kung Fu Kids, Palos, and Lobo.
Lobo marked Angel Locsin’s first starring role in a TV series, months after moving to ABS-CBN from GMA Network. It can be recalled Locsin’s sudden transfer from her previous home network’s rival station, became a hot topic in the local entertainment scene.
Lobo follows a group of werewolves on the verge of extinction as government and human forces hunt them down.
Lyka (Locsin), the Huling Bantay (Last Sentinel), falls in love with the mortal, Noah (Piolo Pascual), who later on would go after a werewolf tribe he doesn’t know Lyka is a part of.
As Huling Bantay (Lyka) is believed to be the last hope of her race to survive the impending rise of the ‘Blood Moon,’ which is prophesied to annihilate all werewolves on the planet. Lyka has to resolve his race’s conflict with humans and the rivalries between the factions within her kind, to successfully pull off her humongous responsibility.
Lobo was a runaway winner in national ratings. According to AGB Nielsen’s National Urban TV Audience Measurement (NUTAM) data.
During its pilot on January 28, 2008, the series scored 36.3% household ratings, the second-highest among all programs that day. In its year-end report, AGB Nielsen listed Lobo as among the top 10 most-watched dramas of 2008, averaging a 32% AGB NUTAM household rating.
The series proved to have succeeded both the viewers and the critics. The series was proclaimed by the Philippine Movie Press Club (PMPC) as the Best Primetime Drama, while Piolo Pascual earned the Best Actor trophy.
Outside the country, the series made waves in various award-giving bodies, including the BANFF World Television Festival, where it was declared as the Best Telenovela Program. Angel Locsin also made history when she became the first Filipino actress to be nominated for Best Performance by an Actress. Tessie Tomas also got a similar nomination, but under the Supporting Actress category in 1989.
Starring in the series alongside Locsin and Pascual, were Geoff Eigenmann, Ryan Eigenmann, Pilar Pilapil, Agot Isidro, Shaina Magdayao, Dimples Romana, Dante Rivero, Robert Arevalo, Lauren Young, AJ Perez, Spanky Manikan, Eric Fructuoso, Timmy Cruz, Dionne Monsanto, Nash Aguas, Gio Alvarez, Cris Villanueva, Simon Ibarra, Maritoni Fernandez, and Ahron Villena.
