Why You Should See It:
The Goodbye Girl’s fourth episode shifts its attention to Ria (Maris Racal) as ‘The Bitter Hopia’. Ria works as a videographer for Caio (Rico Blanco), a popular singer whom she idolizes. They are both engaged in a sort of mutual understanding, and Ria is hopeful it will evolve into a serious relationship, but when Caio revealed he was already in a relationship with another girl, Ria knows she needs to stop hoping.
To make her situation worse, her close friend, Benny (Poppert Bernades) treats her like a princess and promises to give her the love she deserves.
The Bitter Hopia marks the first time real-life couple Rico Blanco and Maris Racal are working as a romantic pair in a series.
Unlike most may expect, the story does neither pay attention to the huge age gap between the stars nor make an issue out of it. Racal and Blanco may be real-life sweethearts, but that didn’t enable them to show tangible romantic chemistry.
There is still an air of awkwardness between them, and there is not enough airtime to allow their romance to foster.
That said, the episode itself is about an entirely different thing. It is simply about being ‘the bitter hopia’ in a relationship. It’s a way to remind people, or lovers for that matter, that we often forget to love ourselves, in our desperate effort to win other people’s love. But more than that, it also teaches us to keep our eyes and hearts open, because the love we deserve might be just around, waiting.
