Why You Should See It:
Darkness and mayhem lurk in I Can See You’s latest title, which brings forth the first onscreen partnership of GMA Network’s undisputed primetime king, and new exclusive Kapuso talent, Beauty Gonzales. In AlterNate, there isn’t much conundrum to make viewers think —at least, not yet—but the smoldering havoc is intense enough to make them stay.
AlterNate follows Nate David (Dingdong Dantes), the adopted son of an outgoing mayor of a provincial town. Firm to ensure the political legacy of his last name will carry on even after he steps down, Nate’s father, Lyndon (Ricky Davao), forces him to run in the upcoming election. Nate now has to navigate a difficult life under his dominant father, who never accepts ‘no’ for an answer. However, him getting entangled in the world of politics isn’t peak madness for Nate, as his discovery of his long-lost twin brother, Michael is about to get things even trickier. Amid this chaos, he has his marriage with his loving wife, Sheila (Beauty Gonzales), to protect; but even that’s set to be threatened by Michael’s arrival.
It remains to be seen whether AlterNate will keep its mystery in the succeeding episodes. It is [still] a story about a marital affair weakened by deception and betrayal.
What makes it utterly unique is its presentation and how elaborately perplexing the setting is. It is unorthodox in the context of local drama anthologies.
As an actor, Dantes has to confront a bigger task–given his dual roles as Nate and Michael through the first five episodes. He’s doing more than just fine. Davao’s enigmatic take on the nefarious Lyndon David isn’t necessarily a surprise, but it’s a sight to behold.
Beauty Gonzales being Sheila, the beautiful wife who gets caught between his obedient husband and controlling father-in-law, has an equally demanding role, which she seems capable of tackling with ease. Watching her in AlterNate should make people realize how good an actress she has become by playing various dramatic roles in ABS-CBN.
There is so much to rave about the quality of this mini-series. It provides a smart color scheme used to bolster AlterNate’s mystifying tone, and the way it mixes drama, romance, and thriller, to produce one satisfying result. Of course, the next developments are yet to define how this new installment will set itself apart from its predecessors, but it is hard to miss how still early in its complete run, AlterNate can create a compelling grip, one it should sustain until the end.
