Filmmaker Mac Alejandre on Wednesday, January 19, does not distinguish what kind of genre he would make but rather which could tell the story the best.
“Bilang direktor, ang tingin ko sa sexy drama or bold or erotica or whatever, is just a platform where a story can be told.
“Hindi ako marunong tumingin as saying na this platform, this genre is better than the other. Hindi ako ganoon tumingin. Ang tinitignan ko lang is maybe a platform is best used to express a certain topic,” he said during the virtual media conference of the upcoming sexy-drama film Silip sa Apoy.
He explained that the best way to tackle a specific topic is through a certain genre, which in his case, is erotica.
“Sa estadong ito, I want to talk about patriarchy and how this social reality is being perpetrated not only by the system but even institutions and even women who support such “patriarchy,” and how this is abusive to certain sectors.
“If using the genre of erotica amplifies this subject effectively, then I think it’s best to use such genre.
“Kasi ano pa ba ang mas effective na expression ng patriarchy or the search of women empowerment kundi sa pamamagitan ng aspetong pisikal o sekswal whether in terms of battery or in terms of abuse.”
However, it is not a director’s fault if some audience does not understand the deeper meaning behind the movie’s sex and nudity.
“And if it could be done in a way that serves more than just information, if it could be done in a way that it serves not only inform or educate but [also] entertain, that’s something good.”
Direk Mac is also a devout Catholic and in terms of making films, he stressed how important the material is.
He also separates his beliefs from his work. The director, at age 49, said that he has now evolved as a filmmaker.
Silip sa Apoy stars Angeli Khang, Sid Lucero, Paolo Gumabao, and Jela Cuenca. It will be available for streaming on January 28, on Vivamax.
