On Wednesday, January 19, Asia’s Romantic Balladeer Christian Bautista admitted there were times he had to back away from collaborations because he believed it would not work.
“Yes, meron na pong nangyari na ganoon. Parang ilagay natin sa merong mga bagay na hindi p’wedeng ipilit.
“Na kahit na… sometimes you test it tapos parang it’s not just there, maybe I’m not the right person, or maybe that person is not the right ano—it really happens,” he confessed during the virtual media conference for his upcoming single with Julie Anne San Jose titled Everybody Hurts.
Bautista noted that there are different styles of singing.
However, not every technique is suitable for him.
“Pero there’s no right or wrong with art eh. That’s their art form eh. So it’s your art form? Okay, maybe it’s just not my taste.”
He also explained that some singers tend to try and sound good in exchange for the song’s soul.
“Minsan kasi din, kapag may narinig kang duet, parang they did their best.
“Parehong magaling pero parang may—ibang feeling sa akin. I dunno why pero it feels like they’re trying too hard to make the song sound good and complicated and then nawala na yung soul.”
But in the case of partnering with San Jose, Bautista admitted he liked singing with her.
“With Julie, unfortunately, this whole presscon you’ll just hear us praise each other. Kasi we really like singing with each other, we really like it.”
It’s because both of them know how to complement each other when performing.
“Mas nafi-feel ko ‘yan kapag nagla-live kami ni Julie in a concert in the many many tours that GMA has given us.
“Mas may ibang energy that we feel and the audience feels at parang—especially like in a medley, when I know that na parang siya yung magte-take ng lead melody, magha-harmony ako and then hihina na ako ng kaunti.
“Kasi ano niya ‘to eh, this is her part. And ‘pag part ko naman, mag-aadjust din siya,” the singer explained.
Everybody Hurts is produced by Universal Studios and is set to be released on various music platforms on Friday, January 21.
