Why You Should See It:
The mystery of fallen marriages is a riddle that once again needs to be solved in the fourth installment of GMA Network’s daytime drama anthology, Stories From the Heart: The End of Us comes on the heels of the success of the three previous stories, including the surprise hit, Loving Miss Bridgette.
The new mini-series sees the onscreen reunion of real-life husband and wife, Carmina Villaroel and Zoren Legaspi. In The End of Us, the infidelity trope is again at the core of the story, but there are too many facets to explore and this show intends to shed light upon them.
Maggie (Villaroel) and Jeffrey (Legaspi) instantly reconnect with each other, years after the former called it quits on their long-distance relationship. The return of their romantic flair eventually bloomed into something more special, and before they knew it, they are already madly in love with each other. After Maggie’s hesitation to say yes to Jeffrey’s marriage proposal, she ultimately agreed.
Romances of this beauty almost always begin and bloom like fairytales. Everything feels perfect; there’s a sense that the love is strong enough to stand the test of time. But like most love stories, the initial flair is mostly just a cover for impending disasters. In Maggie and Jeffrey’s case, their young marriage inevitably confronts problems, and they’re just too weak to handle them with ease. When Maggie catches Jeffrey cheating on her, she knows that trust is no longer something she can readily give to her husband. Sooner than later, they have both plummeted to the gloomiest part of a disintegrating marriage: annulment.
Both Villaroel and Legaspi are in their ‘40s. Real-life couples acting like reel sweethearts rarely conjure onscreen magic. You can see that this series is somewhat disadvantaged, but to the couple’s credit, the chemistry they can show here is convincing enough to give them a chance. Villaroel seems to show a better grip on her character. That observation is true even though Maggie, in reality, is largely a sad character, and one can’t say it’s solely her failing marriage to blame. That said, Legaspi’s Jeffrey is no less of an interesting character, although he has better things to offer when he shares the screen with his real-life wife.
