SB19’s sibling act may not be leaving a seismic impact with their first single anytime soon, but it’s difficult to miss the group’s overwhelming potential.
ShowBT Philippines, the company at the helm of SB19’s success, has dropped the pre-debut single of its first girl group, KAIA.
The new group members were introduced gradually to the public in November. Yesterday, December 11, the music video of Kaya–the girl group’s first single got dropped on YouTube. Penned by its members, Alexa, Angela Charlotte, Charice, Joanna, and Sophia, Kaya is a self-encouragement song, an anthem for courageous souls who aspire to showcase their talent and strength to the world.
The electro-pop single still has that generic upbeat vibe, but there are irresistible hooks here and there–that should make it an appropriate soundtrack for everybody. After all, we all need to convince ourselves we can, at some point, like the words of the track suggest.
The crowning glory of Kaya is its progressively addictive earworm chorus, but it also finds irresistible strength in its rap parts, where Charlotte and Charice both shined the best.
The verses and pre-chorus sounded and linked with the chorus. All these parts feel as if they belong to the same song. What’s worth noting is that their sibling group, SB19, has released tracks with such peculiarity. The best example of such uniqueness is in ‘What?’–one of SB19’s monsters hits released this year.
Lee Oh Won, who worked with SB19 and popular South Korean groups like Stray Kids, Wanna One, and SHINee, produced the track. The music video sees the group unveil their sleek choreography, supervised by their dance coaches, James Wong and Kare Adea.
Kaya is a departure from the usually dark-color imbued releases of most local idol groups as far as the music video is concerned.
The music video production operates under dim-lighting with no sugar-rush or phantasmagorical aspirations. That said, SB19 has also adopted this style.
It remains to be seen whether KAIA will soar to the same heights reached by its sibling group. They can perhaps take SB19’s long but successful journey towards stardom, although it surely will take them more than saying ‘Kaya’ to themselves to push them an inch closer towards their dream.
