Why You Should See It:
Angelica Panganiban is in her element in this sexy comedy, where she plays a no-holds-barred, sex-advice TV show host. Her humor is faultless and spot-on, which only reminds us how effective a comedienne she has always been.
Most viewers tend to forget [especially at times] when her artistic caliber as a compelling dramatic actress takes center stage.
She is among the country’s most talented actresses.
In The Kangks Show, Panganiban is Dr. Kara Teo, a sex therapist hosting a 15-year-old sex-advice show. In her ninth year as host, Dr. Kao faces the threat of unemployment amid the downward trend of her show’s ratings. Viewership has plunged and her boss has just notified her that the show has only 10 episodes left.
She now has to think of the kinkiest and most controversial ideas for her show, to push The Kangks Show’s ratings up, or a religious show will take over her time slot.
Her show’s plummeting rating is eclipsed by the rise of social media star named Cassandra, whose own Tiktok show has been taking away The Kangks Show’s potential Gen Z viewers. Her producer, Nikki (Angeli Bayani), suggested she should get a young co-host to reclaim her Gen Z audiences, but the idea offends her.
The apparent ambition of The Kangks Show seems to be to tell absurdly hilarious but overwhelmingly relatable sexcapades of the featured letter senders in Dr. Kara’s TV show. The characters and plots here are bound together by superficial peculiarities—micropenises, threesomes—and other sex-education-related themes, that most casual viewers won’t likely expect to see on national television.
The show’s heavy tone on sex definitely separates it from the ones that came before it, and one has to think of thanking the pandemic for allowing the rise of non-linear entertainment, and thus paving way for more liberal stories to thrive. Of course, content like this won’t likely make it to national TV in the next five years, so seeing streaming services like WeTV facilitate its breakthrough, is a welcome bliss.
Maris Racal as the brazen, vulgar-mouthed Cassandra, is the scene-stealer of the show. Cassandra’s explosive energy really helped Racal make her mark on the show, although there’s no doubt it’s the combination of sultry and comic flavor the actress injected, that made the character truly soar.
On top of its talented roster of actors, the spotlight remains on Panganiban. There are amusing moments scattered throughout its 30-min episodes, with the Kapamilya actress keeping her place as the show’s most important character. She’s funny, wild, and uproarious, but you can’t discount those moments when the advice-giving portion of the show really becomes something most of us needed, during these times when sex education is rarely discussed on a more accessible platform. That could be a real deal-breaker and a huge selling point for those who are still waiting for big reasons why they should give it a chance.
