On December 11, seasoned actress Boots Anson Roa shared her advice on artists’ longevity in the showbiz industry.
During the media conference for the upcoming series, Roa said her father told her not to forget the people who helped shape her career.
“My father who was a movie actor for Sampaguita, Oscar Moreno. He always told me when I starting in the movies, ‘alam mo iha’ sabi niya, ‘kapag ikaw ay papaakyat pa lang sa hagdan papunta doon sa tinatamasa ng kahit sino na tagumpay, wag mong kalilimutan higit sa lahat ‘yung mga maliliit na nagtatrabaho sa industriya.’
“Kasi kapag nandoon ka na sa tugatog, sa apex, sa zenith, it’s the nature of the beast, kapag nandoon ka na wala ka nang pupuntahan kung hindi pababa. Ang pinakamahirap ay ‘yung mag maintain. Sabi nga ng tatay ko, ‘kapag pababa ka na, makakasalubong mo din the same people na nakasalubong mo paakyat.'”
She also noted the value of communicating with her director despite an actor’s success and experience.
“Unang-una sa set ng isang pelikula kahit gaano ka na kabeterana, kahit gaano ka na katagal, kahit gaano kadaming awards ang natanggap mo, sa set the director is still the captain of the ship. So I think it’s good practice na tatanungin mo sa director kahit siguro sa experience alam mo na, tatanungin mo na, ‘direk ano bang gusto mong atake dito. How do you want this scene and this character portrayal would be approached.'”
Roa then revealed how she brings her A-Game on set by focusing on the truth and the character she portrays.
“Maswerte ako, I studied acting and speech and drama formally in school, so naaapply ‘yung mga techniques na natutunan. But through the years, I think mas importante kesa doon sa mga techniques na ‘yon, ‘yung dalawang elements ng truth and character sa bawat artista na ‘yun ang pairalin mo.”
